Abstract

This paper considers the collaboration of academics and third-space professionals to create an enrichment programme in an English university. It briefly outlines the programme and explores student engagement and reaction to it before identifying tentative short-term outcomes associated with it: increases in self-reported self-confidence, academic, digital, professional, and leadership skills. The programme created space and time for academics and third-space professionals to come together, share their knowledge, and recognise each other’s expertise to manifest ‘knotworking’ (Veles, 2022). A project lead with experience of being an academic and a third-space professional helped to facilitate understanding and develop ‘ingroup’ features such as a sense of shared connection, co-operation, mutual help, and respect for each other. We conclude that an evolving framework of third-space professionals which is firmly part of the real institutional fabric leads to less reliance on project-based reinventions and instead fosters a steady rate of beneficial progress for the entire learning community.

Jill Hanson, Regent’s College London

Jill Hanson is an Associate Professor of Inclusive Education and currently works as Associate Dean (quality enhancement) at Regent’s College London. Formerly at the University of Staffordshire, Jill led academic projects and Academic Development teams, delivering a range of cross-university projects. Her research specialisms are career guidance and transitions for young people with special education needs and disabilities.

Alison Pope, Staffordshire University

Alison Pope is Skills Manager and a Teaching Excellence Fellow at the University of Staffordshire. Her fully integrated team supports students to develop all the academic and research skills they need to succeed in their programme. Within the team there is emphasis on playful learning, the acquisition of information, and digital and AI literacies. She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE.

Carolina Salinas, Staffordshire University

Carolina Salinas is Head of Employability at the University of Staffordshire, where she leads a dynamic team dedicated to designing and delivering inclusive enterprise, employability, and career-management programmes. These initiatives aim to enhance student and graduate progression and outcomes, with a particular emphasis on supporting underrepresented student groups. She is a senior fellow of Advance HE.
